Famous people buried in Santa Clara
Peter H. Burnett (1807-1895)
Tennessee-born lawyer Peter Burnett was California's first governor. He proposed the state's civil law, tax code and port inspections but was despised by legislators and mocked in the press. He quit the post two years after he was elected. As a private attorney, he served as defense counsel for Joseph Smith and other Mormons when they were indicted. Although he opposed slavery, he advocated the expulsion of blacks from the state. He is buried at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, plot 5, space 111.
Tiburcio Vasquez (1835-1875)
California Bandito Tiburcio Vasquez, the prototype for the stereotypical Hollywood movie Mexican bandit, was executed by hanging after a trial in San Jose. His last words to the hangman was "pronto," Spanish for "hurry up." He is buried at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, plot 18.
